Debate about a change in leadership in Karnataka intensifies: What Siddaramaiah said?

Debate about a potential change in leadership in Karnataka is intensifying once again, with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah himself hinting at the possibility. For the first time, Siddaramaiah acknowledged ongoing conversations about a power transfer between him and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar. He said that any final decision would rest with the Congress high command.

This marks a notable shift from Siddaramaiah's earlier stance, where he consistently stressed his commitment to serving a full five-year term.

Meanwhile, Shivakumar had earlier downplayed any discussions regarding a power-sharing arrangement. He recently affirmed his dedication to his current responsibilities.

What Shivakumar said?

D K Shivakumar said earlier this month that the people of the state have blessed the ruling party for five years and that he and CM Siddaramaiah will continue functioning as per the directions of the high command.

As Siddaramaiah approaches the completion of 30 months in office by year's end, the competition for the CM position is heating up, particularly between Shivakumar and Public Works Minister Satish Jarkiholi. Supporters from both camps are actively lobbying for their preferred candidate, engaging in various religious rituals and ceremonies in temples to strengthen their leaders' chances.

50:50 power-sharing formula

Siddaramaiah's recent comments are believed to stem from the 50:50 power-sharing formula that emerged following the Congress party's big victory in the 2023 Karnataka assembly elections. At that time, Shivakumar was vying for the CM post but ultimately accepted the Deputy CM position. Reports suggest that an agreement was reached prior to Siddaramaiah's swearing-in, proposing a 30-month arrangement that would later be reviewed by party leaders.

Siddaramaiah reiterated that the final decision regarding the leadership change will be made by the Congress high command.
