The authorities have cancelled all the leaves of doctors and medical assistants in view of the medical alert issued after the death of 17 people from a mysterious disease in Badhal village of Rajouri district in J&K. At the same time, the number of people sent to quarantine has increased to 230.
Poison cadmium found in bodies of deceased
In this regard, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh said that the preliminary investigation conducted by the Toxicology Laboratory in Lucknow has concluded that the cause is not any infection, virus or bacteria but a toxin. On the matter, Dr. Singh also said that scientists of the Lucknow-based Indian Institute of Toxicology Research have reported the presence of a toxin named cadmium in the bodies of the deceased.
At the same time, in view of the seriousness of the matter, Dr. Amarjit Singh Bhatia, Principal of Rajouri Government Medical College (GMC) Hospital, addressed a press conference in Rajouri last Friday and said that all the leaves of doctors and medical assistants have been cancelled.
He said, "The winter vacation has also been canceled to deal with the medical alert situation after 17 people from three families died under mysterious circumstances in the last one and a half months."
More people shifted to isolation centre
Officials said that as a precaution, more people, including close relatives of the deceased, have been shifted to the Nursing College Isolation Center in Rajouri, taking the number of people kept in isolation to 230. A central team also investigated the cause of deaths last Friday.
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed by the police investigated the criminal aspect after some 'neurotoxins' were found in the samples of the deceased. Officials said that they have questioned more than 50 people in this case.
17 people including 13 children died
In Badal village of Rajouri district, 17 people including 13 children have died in about 48 days since December 7, 2024. All the deaths have occurred in three families in the village. 38 other people related to them have also been affected by the toxin.
Inter-ministerial team was formed to probe deaths
It is worth noting that, Home Minister Amit Shah had ordered to form an inter-ministerial team on January 18 to investigate these deaths. This high level team reached the village last Sunday. The team is being led by the Home Ministry itself. This special team includes experts from the Ministry of Health, Agriculture, Chemicals and Water Resources. Along with investigating the cause of death, it will also take necessary steps to prevent such deaths in future and will keep an eye on the matter.
