The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) has called for a 'tractor march' across the country on January 26. Apart from this, SKM has demanded Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss the pending demands of the farmers.
This call of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha has come amid growing concerns over the health of farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who has been on a hunger strike for 48 consecutive days.
Dallewal, convener of SKM (non-political), has been on an indefinite fast at the Khanauri border of Punjab and Haryana since November 26 last year over various demands of farmers including legal guarantee of minimum support price (MSP) for crops.
SKM to hold meeting on Monday
SKM announced in a statement issued here that a meeting will be held on Monday for a joint discussion on demands including abolition of MSP and National Policy Framework on Agricultural Markets (NPFAM).
SKM has called upon farmers to hold tractor/vehicle/motorcycle parades/rallies at district/sub-division level across the country on 76th Republic Day on 26 January 2025.
PM should immediately convene meeting: SKM
The SKM said that farmers will hold rallies demanding that the PM Modi immediately convene a meeting to discuss farmers' issues with all farmer organisations and save the life of Jagjit Singh Dallewal. SKM has demanded withdrawal of anti-farmer NPFAM immediately and make a law for MSP with legally guaranteed procurement.
The demands include a comprehensive loan waiver scheme for farmers and agricultural workers, no privatisation of electricity, no installation of smart meters, implementation of the provision of free electricity up to 300 units, etc.
Dallewal's fast continues for 48th day
The SKM said that it strongly condemns the insensitive attitude of the Prime Minister for not being ready to hold discussions with the farmer organizations and save the life of farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal. SKM, a common platform of various farmer organizations, led the farmers' protest of 2020-21 against the three agricultural laws that have been repealed. SKM claimed that even the Supreme Court and the President are unable to intervene to save the life of the farmer leader even though his fast unto death continued for the 48th day.
