HMPV virus in India: The total number of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases in the country has risen to 14. Gujarat has the highest number of 4 cases.
On Friday, one case each was found in Rajasthan and Gujarat. A 6-month-old girl in Baran, Rajasthan has been infected with HMPV. At the same time, a 9-month-old child in Ahmedabad tested HMPV positive.
Earlier on Thursday, 3 cases were found. These include a 60-year-old woman in Lucknow, an 80-year-old man in Ahmedabad, Gujarat and a 7-year-old child in Himmatnagar. All three are undergoing treatment.
Now states have also increased vigilance as HMPV cases have increased. In Punjab, the elderly and children have been advised to wear masks. In Gujarat, isolation wards are being made in hospitals. In Haryana too, the health department has been ordered to monitor HMPV cases.
When infected with HMPV, patients show symptoms like cold and Covid-19. Its maximum effect is being seen on small children. Among these, children below 2 years of age are the most affected. The Centre has advised states to enhance surveillance of respiratory illnesses such as 'Influenza Like Illness' and 'Severe Acute Respiratory Issues' and spread awareness about HMPV.
