In a major political development ahead of the Bihar assembly elections-2025, Nitish Kumar's Janata Dal (United) has dealt a notable blow to the BJP by withdrawing its support from the BJP-led government in Manipur. Following this decision, the party's sole MLA in the state assembly will now occupy an opposition seat.
The Janata Dal (United) President in Manipur formally communicated the withdrawal of support to the Governor through a letter. Notably, in 2022, five out of six JDU MLAs had previously joined the BJP and currently there is only one JDU MLA in Manipur Assembly.
JDU removes its Manipur state president
In response to the recent withdrawal, JDU has taken swift action by removing the Manipur state president from their position. This move suggests that Nitish Kumar is likely to remain with the NDA for the upcoming Bihar elections.
Interestingly, the timing of the withdrawal comes as opposition voices in Bihar are questioning Nitish Kumar's loyalty to the alliance. Political discussions in Bihar are rife with speculation about whether Kumar will break ties with the NDA again.
Nitish Kumar intends to contest elections alongside NDA
The developments in Manipur, coupled with the party's actions, appear to convey a message to both Manipur and Bihar that Nitish Kumar intends to contest the assembly elections alongside the NDA.
Since 2022, JDU has been part of the BJP alliance in Manipur, but this recent separation reflects a shift in the party's position in the state. Despite the withdrawal of support from JDU, the BJP's majority government in the Manipur Assembly is expected to remain stable, with no significant impact on its administrative or legislative functions.
As Bihar prepares for assembly elections later this year, the alliance between JDU and BJP remains intact in the state, with Nitish Kumar continuing as Chief Minister. The BJP has also declared that Nitish Kumar will be the NDA's face in the forthcoming elections. It remains to be seen whether JDU's recent actions in Manipur will influence the political landscape in Bihar.
