Mystery disease claims 17 lives in J&K's Rajouri; Central team continues probe; what senior doc said?

Four people, including three sisters, have been admitted to hospital at Badhal village in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir. A mysterious disease has claimed the lives of 17 people in the district in the last one and a half months.

A central team on Wednesday also continued its investigation into the causes of these deaths in three families of the district. A senior doctor involved in the investigation said that more than 200 samples have been sent to various institutions for examination.

On the other hand, three sisters aged 16 to 22 were shifted from Badhal to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMC) in Rajouri after their health suddenly deteriorated on Wednesday. Officials said that another critically ill patient Javed Ahmed (24) was shifted from GMC Rajouri to PGI Chandigarh on Tuesday evening.

He said that all four patients are close relatives of three families who lost their members due to mysterious disease. Meanwhile, officials said that the inter-ministerial team from New Delhi visited Badhal in Kotranka sub-division for the third consecutive day as part of its investigation.

Poison in food items?

Shuja Qadri, senior epidemiologist and head of the community medicine department of GMC Rajouri, said that all the investigations so far have made it clear that the deaths in the village were not the result of any infectious disease. Therefore, the investigation has been limited to identifying poison in food items.

Qadri, who is involved in the investigation, told media, "Based on our investigation so far we have reached some possible conclusions, which will be confirmed by laboratory diagnosis. This is something that is related to food."

These deaths have occurred in the village between 7 December and 19 January under suspicious circumstances. On Tuesday, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had reached the village for inspection. After this, the administration decided to make the village a containment zone.
