Kolkata: The court has sentenced the accused in the rape and murder case at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College to life imprisonment. In response, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has criticized the ruling, labeling it a 'mockery of justice.'
BJP said that justice must not only be served but also seem to be done. Amit Malviya, the BJP's IT cell chief and organisational co-in-charge for West Bengal, has called for an appeal against the decision and asked investigating agencies to examine the actions of the then Kolkata Commissioner and state Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Malviya alleged the evidence in this case had been tampered.
Malviya expressed his views on the social media platform X, stating that the life sentence and a fine of Rs 50,000 imposed on Sanjay Roy, the accused in the RG Kar case, is insufficient. He further insisted that CM Mamata Banerjee should stop protecting the perpetrator of the crime.
Sanjay Roy was convicted for the rape and murder of a female doctor in August 2024 at the Government RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata. The incident sparked nationwide outrage and led to prolonged protests.
Judge Das said that the crime did not meet the criteria for the 'rarest of rare' category and so death penalty could not be awarded. The court also mandated that the state government provide Rs 17 lakh in compensation to the family of the deceased doctor. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had conducted an investigation into the case.
