Kolkata RG Kar Medical College trainee doctor's rape-murder case: Sealdah court on Monday sentenced Sanjay Roy, convicted of the rape-murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College, to life imprisonment after 164 days. The court said, 'This is not the rarest of rare cases. Therefore, death penalty cannot be given.'
The local court ordered the state to pay 17 lakh compensation to the victim's family, but the family refused to accept it. At 12:30 pm, the court heard the arguments of the convict Sanjay, CBI and the victim's family's lawyer.
Earlier, on January 18, the court had convicted Sanjay, but reserved the decision on the sentence. A 160-page verdict has been written for Sanjay's sentence. The trainee doctor was raped and murdered on the night of August 8-9 at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College-Hospital. Sanjay Roy was arrested on August 10.
CBI demands death penalty
The CBI has demanded the court to award death penalty to Sanjay Roy. The agency said that this is one of the rarest of rare cases. The CBI lawyer said, "We pray for the highest punishment so that the sense of justice and security remains in the society." On the other hand, Roy's lawyer argued to avoid the death penalty by citing the guidelines of the Supreme Court.
What did the victim's parents say?
The doctor's mother has expressed dissatisfaction over the CBI investigation. The trainee doctor's mother told the media, "Only one person cannot be involved in this crime. The CBI has failed to catch the other criminals involved in this case. Such criminals do not have the right to live." The victim's father said that we should get justice. All the people involved in the crime committed against my daughter should be punished.
