Maharashtra Municipal Elections-2025: Uddhav Thackeray's party (Shiv Sena UBT) has announced to contest the upcoming municipal elections in Maharashtra independently. This decision will also apply to other municipal corporations, district councils and panchayat elections including Mumbai, Thane, Nagpur. This is the second biggest setback for the INDIA alliance.

Earlier, Arvind Kejriwal announced to contest the Delhi Assembly elections alone. This decision was also supported by Akhilesh Yadav and Mamata Banerjee. After this announcement by Kejriwal, the discussion about rift in the INDIA alliance had intensified. Meanwhile, Shiv Sena UBT added fuel to the fire by announcing to contest the elections alone in Maharashtra.

Shiv Sena UBT lashes out at Congress

On Saturday (January 11), Shiv Sena (UBT) Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut announced, "Working in alliance does not give opportunities to the workers of individual parties and it hinders organizational development. We will contest the elections on our own strength."

Raut also said that even a coordinator could not be appointed on behalf of the INDIA alliance in Maharashtra. Taking a dig at the Congress, he said that this is not right. Being the largest party in the alliance, it was the responsibility of the Congress to call a meeting.

Fought Lok Sabha elections together

Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) was formed in 2019 under the leadership of Uddhav Thackeray, Sharad Pawar and Sonia Gandhi. The purpose of this alliance was to give a tough fight to the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. MVA also got a good number of seats in the Lok Sabha elections. But in the Maharashtra Assembly elections held in 2024 itself, the Maha Vikas Aghadi had to face a crushing defeat. Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar blamed the allies for the defeat of MVA.

Speculation about Sharad Pawar joining NDA

On the other hand, the discussion of Sharad Pawar becoming a part of NDA has also intensified. Recently, NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar praised the strategies and Hindutva propaganda of the RSS. Pawar called it the main reason for the success of BJP in the state.
