Winter has reached its peak in many regions of the country, prompting the Meteorological Department to issue alerts for dense fog in 17 states. Following a cold wave in Delhi, a slight increase in temperature has been observed.
The Shimla Meteorological Department forecasts snowfall in the higher elevations of Himachal Pradesh on Saturday and Sunday. In Kashmir, temperatures have dropped below freezing, resulting in ice formation on Dal Lake in Srinagar. Meanwhile, the minimum temperatures recorded in Punjab and Haryana were 2.3 °C in Moga and 3.1 °C in Sonipat, respectively.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has highlighted fog alerts for the following 17 states: Punjab, Haryana, Assam, Meghalaya, West Bengal, Sikkim, Bihar, East Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Tripura, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh.
MP: Cold wave alert in 15 districts
Khajuraho was the coldest city in Madhya Pradesh in the last 24 hours, where the minimum temperature was recorded at 4.5 degrees Celsius. The temperature in Bhopal was 7.2 degrees, Indore 8.5 degrees and Gwalior 5.8 degrees Celsius. The Meteorological Department has issued a cold wave alert in the 15 northern districts of the state. These districts include Gwalior, Chambal, Datia, Bhind, Morena, Shivpuri, Sheopur, Sagar, Panna, Chhatarpur, Tikamgarh, Rewa, Satna, Umaria and Khajuraho.
Chhattisgarh: Dense fog alert
The effect of cold is continuously increasing in Chhattisgarh, and a drop in minimum temperature has been recorded in many parts of the state. According to the Meteorological Department, Ambikapur was the coldest, where the minimum temperature reached 7 degrees Celsius. The Meteorological Department has issued a dense fog alert in the northern parts of the state for the next 48 hours. During this time the visibility is likely to be very low. Farmers have been advised to make proper arrangements to protect their crops from frost.
Rajasthan: Trains and flights getting delayed
Fatehpur was the coldest city in Rajasthan in the last 24 hours, where the minimum temperature was recorded at 1.1 degrees Celsius. The Meteorological Department has issued a cold wave alert in 21 districts. Due to this, holidays have been extended in many schools. The IMD forecasts that there is a possibility of rain between January 10 and 12, which may further increase the cold. Trains and flights are getting delayed due to cold and dense fog in Rajasthan. Flights arrived late at Jaipur Airport and Udaipur Airport. Many trains are facing delays, with some trains being delayed by up to 23 hours.
J&K: Temp -5 degrees in Srinagar
There is no relief from cold in Jammu and Kashmir at the moment. Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of -5°C today, while the maximum temperature is expected to be 1°C. Cloudy skies and light snowfall are expected in the next few days. Fog may reduce visibility, affecting air and road traffic. Cold wave has set new records in the Kashmir Valley. Pahalgam was the coldest place in the last 24 hours, recording a minimum temperature of minus 10.4 degrees Celsius. Gulmarg recorded a temperature of minus 9.6 degrees Celsius.
Himachal: More snowfall may occur
Heavy snowfall continues in the high altitude areas of Himachal Pradesh, affecting life. Shimla recorded a minimum temperature of 2 degrees Celsius, while Keylong remained the coldest, with the temperature reaching minus 10 degrees Celsius, the coldest place in the state. UP: Visibility low in many dists
Fog alert has been issued in a total of 71 districts of Uttar Pradesh. Out of these, orange alert has been issued in 38 districts and yellow alert in 36 districts. Kanpur was the coldest city in Uttar Pradesh in the last 24 hours, where the minimum temperature was recorded at 4.4 degrees Celsius. Visibility was low in many districts due to dense fog. Railways has canceled many trains, while some trains are running late.
Bihar: Dense fog alert
Cold continues to prevail in Bihar. The Meteorological Department has issued a dense fog alert in 18 districts till January 11. Cold and cold wave are expected to continue in Bihar for the next two days. Holidays of schools in the state have been extended, and people are resorting to bonfires to avoid the cold.
Punjab: Temp may drop further
In the last 24 hours, Bathinda was the coldest city in Punjab, where the minimum temperature reached 3 degrees Celsius. The Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a cold wave alert in 5 districts in Punjab. These districts include Bathinda, Fazilka, Sri Muktsar Sahib, Faridkot and Mansa. Fog is expected to prevail for the next 48 hours and the temperature is expected to drop further.
In Haryana, Narnaul was the coldest city in the state, where the minimum temperature was recorded at 4 degrees Celsius.
