Uttarakhand will become the first state in the country to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) on January 27. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami made the announcement. This law aims to establish uniformity in civil matters and ensure equal rights and responsibilities for all citizens, regardless of caste, religion, or gender, said the CM.
In his statement, Dhami confirmed that all necessary preparations for the UCC's implementation have been completed, including the approval of the rules and the training of relevant officials. The UCC Act was officially notified on March 12, 2024, following presidential assent.
UCC part of a larger initiative: Dhami
Dhami stressed that the UCC represents a significant step towards a more organized and self-reliant nation, aligning with the broader vision of the Prime Minister. He said that the UCC is part of a larger initiative to promote harmony and development within the state.
The chief minister highlighted that the UCC addresses personal civil matters that have historically been discriminatory, marking a pivotal moment in the state's legislative history. The BJP has long championed the UCC, and Uttarakhand's government is now poised to serve as a model for similar legislation in other BJP-led states.
The implementation of the UCC was a key promise made by the BJP during the 2022 assembly elections, which contributed to their electoral success in Uttarakhand. Recently, the state cabinet approved the rules for the UCC's implementation, with Dhami committing to its rollout in January as part of the celebrations for Uttarakhand's silver jubilee year of statehood.
