Sanjay Rai has been found guilty of the rape and murder of a female trainee doctor at RG Kar Hospital, Kolkata. The court is set to pronounce the sentence on Monday.
This incident, which occurred in August of last year, sparked public outrage throughout West Bengal.
On August 9, 2024, the body of a 31-year-old female trainee doctor was found in the hospital's conference room. Investigations revealed that she was first sexually assaulted and then murdered.
Following this incident, protests erupted in Kolkata, leading to a halt in health services across the state for more than two months.
On Saturday, the Sealdah Court in Kolkata delivered its verdict. Special judge Anirban Das said that the evidence provided by the CBI against the accused proves his guilt regarding sexual abuse and rape. Rai has been convicted under sections 64 and 103 (1).
The court has scheduled the sentencing for Monday, during which Sanjay Rai is required to be present.
In this case, the CBI has not yet filed charge sheet against the medical college principal, Sandip Ghosh, and the local police station in-charge, Abhijit Mandal, for allegedly 'destroying evidence,' resulting in their release on bail.
Parents of the deceased doctor express dissatisfaction
The parents of the deceased doctor have expressed dissatisfaction with the CBI's investigation and have submitted petitions to the Supreme Court and the Calcutta High Court, which are currently overseeing the case. In their petitions, they have demanded that the Sealdah special court be stopped from issuing a sentence and that the entire case be re-examined thoroughly.
