Bhopal Gas Tragedy: What did MP High Court say on the issue of burning of Carbide waste in Pithampur?

Bhopal Gas Tragedy: The Madhya Pradesh High Court on Tuesday ordered the trial burning of 40-year-old Union Carbide toxic waste at the industrial waste disposal plant in Pithampur.

It was lying there since the Bhopal gas tragedy of 1984 and was transported to Pithampur in safe containers on the night of 1 January this year.

Local people had opposed its burning in Pithampur, in which two people even tried to commit suicide. A petition was filed in the High Court against this.

According to the plan ordered by High Court, 10 tonnes of waste is to be burnt in each batch, the process of which will start on February 27. it will be trial burning of the waste.

However, after every stage of this three-stage process, the Central Pollution Control Board will test the ash and then the further process will be decided.

Rachna Dhingra, who is involved as an intervener in the petition, told, "The High Court has currently ordered a trial run."

She said that Madhya Pradesh Pollution Control has said that the sources around the Pithampur plant are contaminated, despite this the government is adamant on burning toxic waste in this plant?

In December 1984, thousands of people died due to the leakage of methyl isocyanate gas from the Union Carbide India Limited plant.

Nearly 40 years after the incident, on December 4, 2024, the Madhya Pradesh High Court reprimanded the government and ordered to send the waste to Pithampur within four weeks.
