Delhi Assembly Election-2025: The Jangpura seat in the Delhi Assembly Election-2025 has emerged as a focal point of discussion, second only to the New Delhi Assembly seat in the current elections. A tough contest is unfolding on the ground, indicating a more competitive atmosphere compared to previous elections.
In the last elections, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) enjoyed a significant wave of support, but this time, there is no clear indication of such backing for or against the party. This shift suggests a challenging race ahead.
Former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, who previously represented the Patparganj seat, is now contesting from Jangpura. For Sisodia, this election is not just about winning; it's about solidifying his political legacy and the reputation of the AAP, which has held this seat in the last three elections.
Sisodia confronts formidable opponents
Sisodia, known for his contributions to improving Delhi's education system, is currently facing corruption allegations related to an alleged liquor policy scam. Having won his previous seat (Patparganj) by a narrow margin in the 2020 elections, he now confronts formidable opponents from both the Congress and the BJP in the new seat.
His main challengers include Tarvinder Singh Marwah, a three-time MLA who has switched from Congress to BJP, and Congress candidate Farhad Suri, who hails from a prominent political family and has previously served as Mayor of Delhi. Marwah aims to restore his political standing, while Suri sees this as a chance for the Congress to regain influence in Delhi.
Voters facing a variety of local issues
Jangpura is characterized by its diverse population, with approximately 1.48 lakh voters facing a variety of local issues, including traffic congestion, water-logging, inadequate sewer systems, and poor road conditions. Notably, around 15 percent of the voters are Muslims concentrated in areas like Nizamuddin Dargah, Sarai Kale Khan, and Daryaganj.
The contest is shaping up to be triangular, with Marwah and Suri both being well-known figures in the region. While Sisodia is recognized as a capable leader, some local voters perceive him as an outsider. Although his name recognition may aid him, many believe the competition will be fierce.
AAP's main strategy revolves around free schemes
The AAP's main strategy revolves around its free schemes and the promise of providing Rs 2100 per month to women. However, Marwah has questioned Sisodia's credibility, stating, "He has nothing except false promises now. The public has seen his work in the last ten years. The public will not fall into this trap."
On the other hand Suri claims that voters are recalling the developmental achievements of the Congress era. Some constituents express dissatisfaction with AAP's unfulfilled promises regarding road repairs and sewer improvements over the past decade. Acknowledging these concerns, Sisodia has been vocal in his rallies, pledging to address infrastructure issues swiftly.
