A large number of farmers have been agitating at the border of Haryana and Punjab for over a year. They aimed to travel to Delhi with various demands, including the MSP guarantee law, but the Haryana government did not permit them to cross the border.
Consequently, the farmers established a protest front in that area. Simultaneously, farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal has been on a hunger strike for the last 60 days, and his condition is continuously deteriorating. In response, the government has taken the initiative to engage in dialogue with the farmers.
Previously, a meeting was held on February 14 between the farmers and government representatives in Chandigarh, but no resolution was reached. However, Prahlad Joshi, who represented the central government during the meeting, stated that the discussions were positive and indicated that the next meeting would be scheduled soon. The second meeting is set to take place today on 22 February, following the February 14 discussions.
Prahlad Joshi will be present at today's meeting alongside Shivraj
Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan did not attend the earlier meeting. However, Union Minister Prahlad Joshi will be present at today's meeting alongside the Agriculture Minister. There is a possibility of reaching a consensus between the government and the farmers during this meeting. During the previous meeting, Prahlad Joshi also urged Jagjit Singh Dallewal to end his hunger strike, but Dallewal has not yet agreed to do so.
Dallewal has been on a hunger strike at the Khanauri border between Punjab and Haryana since November 26, aiming to pressure the government to accept the farmers' demands, including the legal guarantee of Minimum Support Price (MSP) for crops. Farmers, under the banners of Samyukta Kisan Morcha (non-political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, have been camping at the Shambhu and Khanauri borders since February 13, after security forces prevented them from marching to Delhi.
