The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed that fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah will not participate in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Harshit Rana has been named as his replacement in the 15-member squad.
Besides, Varun Chakravarthy has been included in the team, taking the place of Yashasvi Jaiswal.
Bumrah may gradually return to bowling
Bumrah's latest scans conducted in Bengaluru over the weekend showed no major issues; however, he is not yet ready to resume bowling. His recovery timeline remains uncertain, but he is expected to begin running in a couple of weeks, followed by a gradual return to bowling under the supervision of the BCCI's medical team.
This marks the second ICC tournament that Bumrah will miss due to injury, having also been sidelined during the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia due to a back injury that required surgery.
Harshit Rana made his ODI debut in the ongoing series against England, where he was previously named as Bumrah's backup. He shared the new ball with Mohammed Shami in his debut match in Nagpur.
Jaiswal will now serve as a non-traveling substitute
In a further change, Varun Chakravarthy replaces Yashasvi Jaiswal, who will now serve as a non-traveling substitute along with Mohammed Siraj and Shivam Dube. Rohit Sharma had hinted at Varun's inclusion, praising the spinner's unique abilities. Since his return to the T20I squad, Varun has taken 31 wickets at an impressive average of 11.25 and recently made his ODI debut, taking 1 for 54 in Cuttack.
India's squad for the Champions Trophy: Rohit Sharma (captain), Shubman Gill (vice-captain), Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (WK), Rishabh Pant (WK), Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Harshit Rana, Mohammed Shami, Arshdeep Singh, Ravindra Jadeja, Varun Chakaravarthy
Non-travelling substitutes: Yashasvi Jaiswal, Mohammed Siraj and Shivam Dube
