Elections in Delhi have concluded, but the announcement of the Chief Minister and government formation is still pending. Following this, Bihar will hold assembly elections later this year, while discussions about West Bengal are already underway.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has announced that her party, the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC), will contest the upcoming assembly elections in West Bengal independently, a move seen as a significant setback for Akhilesh Yadav.
Banerjee has expressed confidence that the TMC will secure a two-thirds majority in the 2026 assembly elections, as reported by the TMC's mouthpiece. She ruled out any possibility of forming an alliance with the Congress for these elections during a TMC Legislature Party meeting.
According to 'Jago Bangla', Banerjee told party MLAs, "Trinamool will return to power with a two-thirds majority in 2026. We do not need anyone's help. We will fight alone and win alone." She urged the party to begin preparations for the state assembly elections, asserting that the TMC will form the government for the fourth consecutive time.
Big blow to both Congress and Akhilesh Yadav
This announcement is seen as a big blow to both the Congress and Akhilesh Yadav, who have been attempting to expand his influence across states following an encouraging performance in the Lok Sabha elections. Yadav had sought closer ties with Banerjee, even participating in TMC's foundation day celebrations. However, her recent statement diminishes the likelihood of the Samajwadi Party's entry into West Bengal.
The West Bengal unit of Congress reacted strongly to Banerjee's remarks, suggesting that such "unnecessary comments" stem from panic among parties that have neglected the Congress following the Delhi Assembly elections. The Congress said that the BJP gained seats due to a division of votes between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Congress.
Mamata Banerjee responded to opposition claims by stating, "Our schemes have benefited the people, and they will stand with us again." Her decision to contest independently is significant amid speculation regarding the Congress's future strategy in West Bengal, especially after the leadership change within the party.
In her remarks, Banerjee firmly stated, "There is no question of an alliance. Trinamool will fight alone and achieve a historic victory. Congress has no presence in Bengal." She attributed AAP's defeat in Delhi to a lack of coordination with Congress, which she believed led to their poor performance and ultimately benefited the BJP.
