Prayagraj Maha Kumbh 2025: Is water at the Sangam suitable for bathing? What CPCB report submitted to NGT says?

The Prayagraj Mahakumbh-2025, which began on January 13, 2025, is set to conclude on February 26, 2025. Reports indicate that over 54 crore people have participated in the event so far. However, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has raised alarming concerns regarding the water quality in Prayagraj, as submitted to the National Green Tribunal (NGT).

According to the CPCB's report, there has been a notable increase in fecal coliform bacteria levels during the Mahakumbh, leading to heightened pollution in the river. The report highlights that the fecal coliform levels at various locations in Prayagraj exceed the acceptable limit for bathing water quality, which is set at 2,500 units per 100 ml.

The NGT is currently addressing the issue of sewage discharge into the Ganga and Yamuna rivers in Prayagraj. In December 2024, the tribunal directed the Uttar Pradesh government to devise a sewage management plan in preparation for the 2025 Mahakumbh Mela.

Additionally, the NGT had mandated that devotees be informed about the water quality prior to taking a dip. However, this information has not been adequately provided. The NGT emphasized the importance of ensuring a safe supply of Ganga water for both drinking and bathing during the Mahakumbh.

Concerns about water quality are not new; during the Kumbh Mela in 2019, similar issues were reported, with the CPCB noting poor water quality even on major bathing days. Elevated levels of Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) and fecal coliform were recorded, particularly during peak bathing times.
