Turmoil in Maharashtra Politics: Cracks Widening in Mahayuti Alliance, Will Opposition Take Advantage?

There is currently turmoil in the politics of Maharashtra. While the opposition is leaving no stone unturned to establish its dominance in power, the Mahayuti alliance is struggling to overcome its own internal strife. The three constituent parties of Mahayuti do not seem to be getting along with each other, particularly in the ongoing tug of war between Shiv Sena (Shinde) and the BJP.

Shinde's warning

On one hand, Eknath Shinde is warning the government not to take him lightly and is also not attending the Mahayuti meetings. This attitude is becoming a problem for the alliance. Meanwhile, speculations of a rift growing within the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance have intensified, as Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde did not attend three high-profile government programs recently.

Moreover, Eknath Shinde also missed the inauguration of the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the birth anniversary celebrations of the Maratha king, and the inauguration of a theme park, which CM Devendra Fadnavis attended. His absence has fueled rumors of a cold war within the Mahayuti.

Rift became visible after Fadnavis became CM

The three parties had formed the Mahayuti alliance with mutual consent. Until Eknath Shinde was the Chief Minister, there were no visible rifts. However, ever since the BJP won the Maharashtra assembly elections independently and handed over the CM's chair to Devendra Fadnavis, discussions of Eknath Shinde's displeasure have surfaced, and he is now openly expressing his discontent.

Shinde was not appointed to State Disaster Management Authority

Recently, Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar did not appoint Eknath Shinde to the State Disaster Management Authority. However, due to the opposition, Eknath Shinde was eventually included. Shinde was excluded because he did not attend any official meetings, including a meeting organized by Devendra Fadnavis regarding the preparations for the Nashik Kumbh. After that meeting, Shinde called a separate meeting of officials and chaired it, indicating a clear rift between the two leaders.

Opposition will try to take advantage of this growing divide

The opposition will likely try its best to take advantage of this growing divide within the Mahayuti. The rift between Eknath Shinde and Devendra Fadnavis signifies a deeper divide between the two parties. The opposition understands that it is crucial for the BJP to maintain Eknath Shinde's support for the upcoming local body elections. In the meantime, this rift between the two could prove beneficial for the Mahavikas Aghadi in those elections.
