Delimitation of Lok Sabha and Assembly seats is proposed on the basis of the 2026 census in the country. On the basis of this delimitation, Lok Sabha seats and assembly seats in the states will be reduced and increased across the country. This is mentioned in the Constitution, it will be decided on the basis of population.
So far, no effective steps have been taken by the central government regarding this delimitation, the reason for this is that the census has not been done in the country after 2011. However, politics has already heated up regarding this possible delimitation.
MK Stalin calls an all-party meeting
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has indicated that the possibility of reducing seats in delimitation, along with opposition to Hindi, will be major issues in the 2026 assembly elections. He has called for an all-party meeting on March 5, during which discussions will focus on the Hindi language and delimitation.
Home Minister Amit Shah stated in Tamil Nadu that the number of seats for South Indian states, including Tamil Nadu, will not be reduced in the proposed delimitation of Lok Sabha and Assembly seats based on the census after 2026. Amit Shah provided this assurance while inaugurating BJP offices in three districts, including Coimbatore, on Wednesday.
DMK, which is looking for an issue for the election, after the allegation of imposing Hindi in the state, has now announced to oppose the possibility of reduction in seats of South Indian states including Tamil Nadu in the delimitation.
Assembly and LS seats will be determined afresh
Actually, on the basis of the first census after 2026, the seats of the Assembly as well as Lok Sabha are to be determined afresh. It was believed that due to the relatively rapid increase in population in the northern Indian states, their seats in the Lok Sabha will also increase and the seats of South Indian states will be reduced in the same proportion.
However, now Shah has made it clear that despite the relatively less population, in the delimitation, the Lok Sabha seats in South Indian states will be increased in proportion to the North Indian states and not even a single seat will be reduced. During this, Shah indicated to make corruption and anti-national activities during the DMK government a big issue in the assembly elections.
