Amidst language dispute, Stalin government of Tamil Nadu takes big decision on currency symbol (₹)

Stalin government of Tamil Nadu has taken a big decision once again. Amidst the growing controversy over language in Tamil Nadu, the state government removed '₹' from the state budget and changed it to 'ரூ', after which the politics of the country has heated up once again.

'₹' symbol changed to 'ரூ' symbol

Tamil Nadu's Stalin government has taken a big decision on the currency symbol (₹). In fact, the government changed the logo of the state budget from Rupee to Tamil language 'Ru'. The Tamil Nadu government is going to present the budget of 2025/26 in the assembly on Friday. This decision to change the symbol of Rupee has been taken by the ruling DMK amid allegations of imposing Hindi on the state through the three-language formula in the new National Education Policy.

This is the letter 'Ru' of the Tamil script. There is a tussle between the DMK and the central government over 'imposing Hindi' through the new National Education Policy. Meanwhile, the Stalin government has taken this important step. This is the first time that a state has rejected the national currency symbol.

Symbol of '₹' was given in 2010

The symbol of Rupee is made by combining the letter 'R' of Devanagari script and the letter 'R' of Roman script, in which a horizontal line is also made. This line reflects our national flag and the equal sign. The Government of India has accepted this symbol on 15 July 2010.

Dispute over language heats up

The dispute between the Centre and the State Government over language in Tamil Nadu has intensified. The Center is talking about implementing the New Education Policy (NEP) there. This policy proposes three languages, which Tamil Nadu is opposing. It is strongly opposing the Hindi language here.

Political uproar over removal of Hindi name from railway station

On Sunday, DMK workers erased the name written in Hindi from the board of Pollachi railway station in Coimbatore with black colour. This incident happened at a time when the state and central governments are face to face over allegations of imposing Hindi.
