Most of the famous temples dedicated to Mahadev, the God of Gods, are located in snowy areas or within caves on high hills. Devotees often embark on journeys to seek these divine places. One such ancient site of Lord Shiva is found in a cave nestled within the dense forests of Satpura in Khargone, Madhya Pradesh. This revered location is known as Bijagarh Mahadev, where nature itself pays homage to the Lord throughout the year.
Situated on a high hill in Bhagwanpura tehsil, about 37 km from the Khargone district headquarters, Bijagarh Mahadev was largely unknown until about 200 years ago. According to local lore, God appeared in the dream of a member of the Darbar Samaj, guiding him to this remarkable site. Today, devotees from Khargone and neighboring districts, including Maharashtra, flock here to seek the blessings of Baba.
Mangilal Patidar, a sevadar at the temple, shares that this sacred site has been revered for hundreds of years. While the origins of the Shivling remain unclear, it is said that the grandfather of Amar Singh Mandloi from the Darbar Samaj, who resides in Raibidpura, discovered the site following a divine vision. Within the cave, three Shivlings were already established, with one added later.
Devotees assert that the presence of God is felt here, and many claim that their wishes are fulfilled upon visiting. Jhawar Singh, a 76-year-old resident of Shikhandi village, recounts how he was able to walk again after being brought to Baba's shelter following a severe leg injury. Doctors had predicted he would never regain full use of his leg, but with Baba's blessings, he recovered without surgery and now climbs the mountain regularly for darshan.
Atmosphere here brings a sense of relaxation
Visitors Ramit Sagaur, Sumit Sagaur, and Anita Bai, who traveled from Khargone for darshan, express that the atmosphere here brings a sense of relaxation and positive energy. The area is surrounded by lush trees, plants, and mountains, and a natural waterfall flows during the rainy season. The cave is often compared to Amarnath, earning it the nickname "MP's Amarnath," as the Shivling here is shaped by nature's artistry, similar to the one formed from snow at Amarnath.
To reach Bijagarh village, one can travel via Jalalabad, crossing the Ghat section of a high hill. Afterward, visitors must climb stairs to reach the cave located about 300 meters above Munna Baba’s ashram. From there, a descent of approximately 15 stairs leads to the cave, where devotees can witness Bijagarh Mahadev, represented in the form of Amarnath. Here, the Shivling is anointed drop by drop by nature throughout the year.
