Gangaur Vrat 2025: What Is Its Significance and How It is Observed?


Gangaur Vrat, dedicated to Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati, is observed on the Tritiya Tithi falling in the Shukla Paksha of the Chaitra month. In 2025, Gangaur Vrat will be celebrated on March 31. According to scriptures, this day is marked by rituals that honor Lord Bholenath and Mother Parvati.


The term "Gangaur" combines "Gan," referring to Lord Shiva, and "Gauri," representing Mother Gauri, or Parvati. Traditionally, married women observe the Gangaur fast to pray for the long life of their husbands, while unmarried girls fast to seek a suitable groom.


When is Gangaur Vrat 2025?


According to the Panchang, the Tritiya Tithi of Shukla Paksha in Chaitra month will begin on March 31 at 9:11 AM and conclude on April 1 at 5:42 AM. Considering the Udayatithi, Gangaur Vrat will be observed on March 31.


Gangaur Rituals


On the day of Gangaur Vrat, devotees should take a bath in the morning and wear clean clothes. Idols of Lord Shiva and Mata Gauri should be crafted from clay and adorned in beautiful garments.


The worship should be conducted methodically, including the offering of makeup items to Mata Parvati. Sandalwood, Akshat, Roli, and Kumkum should be applied to both deities, along with offerings of Durva.


Incense and lamps should be lit in front of the idols, and Churma should also be offered. A special Suhaag Jal can be prepared by combining a silver coin, betel nut, betel leaf, milk, curd, Gangajal, turmeric, kumkum, and Durva in a plate. This Suhaag Jal should be sprinkled on Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati, followed by sprinkling it on family members.


Importance of Gangaur Vrat


Gangaur Vrat holds significant importance in Sanatan Dharma. It is believed that observing this fast grants women unbroken good fortune. Unmarried girls also partake in this fast to seek a husband akin to Lord Shiva. According to religious beliefs, Mother Parvati travels with Lord Shiva to bless married women with enduring good fortune. Women worship with the hopes of achieving happiness, prosperity in their families, and the protection of marital bliss.
