Half the employees of the US Department of Education will be laid off

The US Department of Education has planned a massive reduction in the number of its employees. Under this plan, it is going to remove about half of its employees.

About 2100 people will be affected by this reduction. They will be sent on leave from March 21.

The Trump administration in the US is working on a plan to reduce the number of central employees. Its purpose is to reduce government expenditure.

Currently more than 4000 employees are working in the US Department of Education and its annual budget is about $238 billion.

This department, formed in the US in the year 1979, allocates funds to public schools, provides loans to students for studies and runs schemes for poor students.

In America, the responsibility of running schools and preparing curriculum is on the states and districts; schools here receive only 13 percent of their funding from the federal education department.

US Education Secretary Linda McMahon described this move as a significant step toward restoring the greatness of the country's education system.

McMahon posted a series of tweets stating that the Department of Education has initiated a reduction in force, impacting nearly 50% of its workforce.

She tweeted: “As part of the Department of Education’s final mission, the Department today initiated a reduction in force (RIF) impacting nearly 50% of the Department’s workforce.”
