Amid heavy snowfall in the high-altitude areas of Uttarakhand, 32 out of 57 Border Roads Organisation workers trapped in an avalanche near Mana village, close to Badrinath in Chamoli district, have been safely rescued. Meanwhile, a warning has been issued for the next 24 hours in Jammu and Kashmir regarding the risk of avalanches.
The warning indicates a high danger level for avalanches above 2500 meters in the districts of Doda, Kishtwar, Poonch, Rajouri, Ramban, and Reasi over the next day.
According to information from the Disaster Management Department of Uttarakhand, by 5 PM, 32 workers trapped in the avalanche, located six kilometers ahead of Badrinath Dham, have been rescued, while efforts to evacuate the remaining 25 workers are ongoing.
The Uttarakhand Disaster Management Department reported, “By 5:00 PM, 32 people had been rescued safely. The process of evacuating the remaining 25 people is in progress. Relief and rescue work is being conducted on a war footing to assist those trapped in the snow.”
The avalanche occurred at the BRO workers' camp situated between Mana and Badrinath, burying the workers in snow. Upon receiving information about the incident, personnel from the police, army, Border Roads Organization, Indo-Tibetan Border Police, State Disaster Response Force, and the Disaster Management Department promptly arrived at the scene to initiate rescue and relief operations.
As of now, there have been no reports of casualties from this incident. Mana, located at an altitude of 3200 meters, is the last village on the Indo-Tibet border, approximately three kilometers from Badrinath. Badrinath Dham is positioned at the foothills of the Nar and Narayan mountains, with the Alaknanda river flowing through the region. The accident was triggered by an avalanche from Nar mountain.
