Maharashtra Legislative Council Elections: Why Candidate Selection is Herculean Task for Mahayuti?

Elections are set to take place on March 27 for five seats in the Maharashtra Legislative Council. While the victory of candidates from the Mahayuti alliance appears certain, securing candidacy for this victory poses a big challenge for aspirants. Each of the three constituent party of Mahayuti has multiple contenders vying for nominations for each seat.

20 strong contenders in BJP

Within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the leading party in the Mahayuti alliance, there are 20 strong contenders for the three Legislative Council seats. The decision on which three candidates will receive tickets has been delegated by Maharashtra BJP leaders to the party's top leadership.

5 Legislative Council seats fell vacant

In the previous Assembly elections of 2024, the BJP nominated its Legislative Council members Praveen Datke, Ramesh Karad, and Gopichand Padalkar. Similarly, Amsha Padvi from Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena and Rajesh Vitekar from Ajit Pawar's Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) were also nominated, with all five successfully winning their Assembly seats. Thus 5 Legislative Council seats fell vacant.

Voting on March 27

Voting for the vacant Legislative Council seats will occur on March 27. According to the strength of numbers, 3 candidates of BJP, 1 of Shiv Sena and 1 of NCP will be successful in going to the upper house. For this, the last date for filing nomination has been fixed as 17th March. But due to many people being interested, all three parties have not been able to announce their candidates yet.

Now the loyalists could be rewarded

Due to the political alliances and party switching that took place after the political developments in Maharashtra in the last few years, the old loyal leaders of BJP could not get justice. There have been allegations that the leaders who came from other parties usurped the rights of the loyal leaders of the party due to bargaining and money power.

But this time in the Legislative Council elections, the leaders who have been serving the party for years can get rewarded. Among them, Dadarao Keche, Amarnath Rajurkar and Madhav Bhandari are considered to be the main contenders. But apart from these leaders, party spokesperson Keshav Upadhyay, Madhavi Naik, Sanjay Kinikar, Vijay Chaudhary, Sanjay Pandey and some other North Indian leaders are also in the race.

Tenure of only 13 months

The important thing is that the three BJP Legislative Council members who are elected will get a tenure of only 13 months. But being the largest party in the country and the world, there is still a big fight for candidature in BJP.

Sources claim that the Maharashtra unit of BJP has sent a list of 20 people to the party high command. Out of these, three names will be approved by Sunday evening. Because nomination has to be filed on Monday.
