Wayanad has immense tourism potential
On Friday, March 28, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra had said that Kerala's hill district Wayanad has immense tourism potential due to its natural beauty and resources. She called for a long-term blueprint to create a sustainable model of tourism here. Along with calling for developing the tourism potential of Wayanad, she cautioned that its basic elements nature and environment should be taken care of.
Priyanka had said that after seeing the pictures of the landslide and disaster in Choorlamala and Mundakkai areas of the district, people started fearing to come here. She said this fear has to be dispelled by showing the country and the world that the destruction has happened in a limited area, the district is safe and there is a lot to see and explore in Wayanad.
"It is important for us to enhance that tourism potential," she said after inaugurating the Association of Tourism Trade Organisations India (ATTOI) tourism conference held at Sulthan Bathery this afternoon.
Source of experiential tourism
Priyanka Gandhi also referred to the rich heritage of the district, especially in the tribal areas of Wayanad, and said it could be a source of experiential tourism as people coming here from other parts of the country and the world can see, experience and learn its heritage. She said Wayanad is no longer popular as a tourist destination but for the politics here. The Congress MP said there is something for everyone here and there is a lot to show the world.
Priyanka said it would be very sad if the natural beauty of Wayanad is destroyed. She urged people to be respectful of the environment while travelling. Priyanka said, “We are still a long way from that (destruction of Wayanad's natural beauty) and I think we can emerge as a world-class tourist destination. But, we need to create a sustainable model of tourism. This should involve active participation of local communities in the ownership, operation and management of tourism projects.”
