Gujarat High Court CJ rules on extension of Asaram's bail

Asaram, convicted in the rape case, has got interim bail of three months from the Gujarat High Court. Asaram, who was already on temporary bail on medical grounds, had filed a petition in the High Court to extend his bail period, which was to end on March 31. The two-judge bench of the High Court had a divided opinion on this matter, after which the matter reached the Chief Justice of Gujarat High Court. Now the Chief Justice has ordered to extend the bail till June 30.

Asaram had sought six months' permanent bail in the Gandhinagar rape case, but the High Court has granted interim bail of only three months. However, he has also been convicted in the Jodhpur rape case and is serving life imprisonment. Therefore, now he will have to file a petition for bail in the Rajasthan High Court as well.

In the bail plea, Asaram cited his 86 years of age and serious health problems. He argued in the court that under Article 21 of the Indian Constitution, convicts also have the right to life, and should be provided with proper treatment. He said that invasive surgery is difficult for elderly prisoners, so they need special medical care.

According to the report of AIIMS Jodhpur, Asaram is suffering from coronary artery disease which falls in the high-risk category. He needs special nursing care and close medical monitoring. Regular consultation with endocrinologist and nephrologist is necessary. Looking at the seriousness of his health, experts termed his condition as fatal.
