A big news is coming for UPI users, in fact, new rules are going to be implemented from April 1, 2025. This will affect users of payment apps like Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm. According to the National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI), those mobile numbers linked to UPI, which have been closed for a long time, will be removed from the bank account. This means that UPI transactions will not be possible through inactive numbers.
Why was the decision taken?
NPCI said that inactive mobile numbers linked to UPI can pose a security threat. When users change their number or deactivate it, their UPI accounts often remain active, which puts them at risk of being misused. If these numbers are given to someone else again, fraudsters can access financial transactions. To prevent this, banks and payment apps like Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm will now remove such inactive numbers from the UPI system as per the instructions of NPCI.
These users will be affected the most
This decision will have the greatest impact on users who have taken a new mobile number, but their bank account is still linked to the old number. Also, those users who are using UPI with their inactive mobile number will also face inconvenience.
Why is mobile number necessary for UPI
Mobile number is mandatory for UPI as it is an integral part of the system that ensures security, convenience and identity. First of all, it works to link your bank account to UPI; UPI account cannot be activated without a mobile number registered with the bank, thereby guaranteeing that only the account holder uses it.
