Bhopal: The Bhopal Memorial Hospital and Research Center (BMHRC) has achieved a major milestone in the medical field with its first successful eye transplant, performed on Tuesday. A 50-year-old gas victim from Raisen district received a cornea transplant, carried out by the specialized doctors of the Ophthalmology Department at BMHRC.
The patient had suffered an eye injury 15 years ago, leading to severe damage to one eye, while the vision in the other eye was significantly impaired due to cataracts. To restore the patient's sight, the transplant utilized a cornea donated by the late Mrs. Asha Sharma, who had generously pledged her eyes to a private hospital in Bhopal on March 17. Her cornea was transported to BMHRC on Sunday, and the transplant was successfully completed on Tuesday. The patient is currently in good health.
The accomplished team behind this remarkable medical achievement included Dr. Hemlata Yadav, Head of the Department of Ophthalmology, Professor Dr. Anjali Sharma, Visiting Consultant Dr. Pratik Gurjar, and other medical professionals.
Dr. Manisha Srivastava, Director-in-Charge of BMHRC, expressed her delight over the success, stating, "We had been striving to establish the eye transplant facility for a long time, and this is a significant achievement for us. We are also working towards initiating other organ transplant facilities at BMHRC in the near future."
