What did Elon Musk's Tesla say about Trump's tariffs?

Billionaire businessman Elon Musk's company Tesla has warned that countries retaliating to US President Donald Trump's tariffs could harm it and other American exporters. Tesla makes electric cars.

Musk is a close ally of the US President Trump and is leading efforts to reduce federal government expenditure.

In an unsigned letter sent to the US Trade Representative, Tesla said that it supports "fair trade", but it fears that American exporters will be badly affected if other countries respond to the tariffs imposed by the US.

This letter was written on the same day when Trump supported Musk in the White House and promised to buy Tesla cars.

Tesla's share price has fallen by 40 percent since the beginning of this year.

Both the European Union and Canada have threatened massive retaliatory measures over the US imposition of tariffs on steel and aluminium imports, which came into effect earlier this week.
