Astronaut Sunita Williams, along with fellow astronaut Butch Wilmore, is likely to return to Earth in the next three to four days, according to ISRO scientist M Annadurai. He said this in response to inquiries from the media.
M Annadurai stated, "Although there were some difficulties in the beginning, it is important to bring Sunita Williams back safely. I think the necessary plans and work have been done for this."
He further explained that Sunita Williams has handed over her commander position to a Russian astronaut, and preparations are in place for her imminent return.
Williams and Wilmore have been stationed at the International Space Station (ISS) for about 10 months. They launched on the Boeing Starliner spacecraft for a test mission on June 5, 2024, with plans to return after eight days. However, complications arose when the Starliner encountered issues with five of its thrusters, which are essential for maneuvering. Additionally, the spacecraft ran out of helium, forcing it to rely on its fuel for propulsion, which delayed the astronauts' return.
Earlier, the Crew-10 team has reached the International Space Station to bring back astronauts Sunita Williams and Barry Wilmore stranded in space to Earth.
This team includes NASA's Anne McClain and Nicole Ayers, Takuya Onishi of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency and ROSCOSMOS astronaut Kirill Peskov. This team will replace astronauts Sunita Williams and Barry Wilmore.
Meanwhile, billionaire businessman Elon Musk wrote on X, "SpaceX Dragon will bring the astronauts back in a few days."
