After the longstanding friendship between the BJP and AIADMK in Tamil Nadu, the current party president K Annamalai has reportedly resigned from his position. While Annamalai has not yet confirmed his resignation, sources indicate that he has resigned, intensifying the political climate in the state. With assembly elections scheduled for 2026, the BJP is reconsidering its alliance with AIADMK following a setback in the Lok Sabha elections.
DMK currently has an alliance with the Cong
The DMK, led by MK Stalin, currently has an alliance with the Congress in Tamil Nadu. On Friday, Tamil Nadu BJP President K. Annamalai stated that a new party leader would be elected unanimously, clarifying that he is not a contender for the position, thereby distancing himself from the party's leadership.
Palaniswami met Shah
Recently, AIADMK General Secretary and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi, signaling a potential rekindling of ties with the BJP. Annamalai, when questioned about AIADMK's possible return to the NDA before the elections, remarked, "I am not authorized to talk about alliance or formation of coalition at this time," emphasizing his role in strengthening the party in Tamil Nadu.
Speculations on New Leadership
Following Annamalai's resignation, discussions regarding his successor have emerged, with several names being considered for the presidency. Prominent candidates include Union Minister L. Murugan, former Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan, and Nainar Nagendran. Notably, Soundararajan faced defeat in the Lok Sabha elections, and Annamalai's resignation has heightened the political temperature in the state.
Alliance Decisions Ahead
Annamalai indicated that the BJP's central leadership would make an "appropriate decision" regarding the alliance before the state elections, stating, "Our leadership will take a decision at the appropriate time regarding the size and form of the alliance in 2026, and the nature of the NDA, and naturally the media will be informed."
Will AIADMK Return to NDA
Top sources within the BJP and AIADMK suggest that the BJP is determined to re-establish the AIADMK's presence in the NDA, even at the cost of sacrificing a prominent state leader. KA Sengottaiyan's recent visit to Delhi is indicative of this development. Sengottaiyan, who was once a contender for the Chief Minister position after Jayalalithaa's passing in 2017, has expressed dissatisfaction with party decisions regarding appointments in his district. He has not attended major party events.
AIADMK had decided to separate from NDA only after Annamalai's statements on CM Annadurai and Jayalalithaa in the year 2023. It was being speculated that if BJP and AIADMK form an alliance, then Annamalai's political sacrifice is certain. BJP fought the Lok Sabha elections alone in Tamil Nadu and lost badly. Now the party does not want to take any kind of risk in the assembly elections. Therefore, Annamalai's resignation before the alliance is now being considered a part of the strategy.
