The Waqf Amendment Bill has been challenged in the Supreme Court. Bihar Congress MP Mohammad Javed has filed a petition against the bill in the top court. Representing Kishanganj in Bihar, Javed has previously been a member of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) formed on Waqf matters.
The petition argues that the bill discriminates against the rights of Muslims, violating the right to equality under Article 19 of the Constitution, as well as infringing upon the rights to practice and manage religion under Articles 25 and 26. Additionally, it contends that the bill undermines the protections afforded to minorities under Article 29.
Owaisi has also filed a petition
Asaduddin Owaisi, the chief of AIMIM, has also filed a petition in the Supreme Court against the Waqf (Amendment) Bill. The bill was passed in the Rajya Sabha with the support of 128 members, while 95 members opposed it. In the Lok Sabha, it was approved on April 3, with 288 members in favor and 232 against.
Protests have erupted
Protests have erupted across various cities in the country in response to the passing of the Waqf Bill. After Friday prayers, members of the Muslim community took to the streets in cities such as Ranchi, Kolkata, and Ahmedabad, demanding the withdrawal of the bill. In Ahmedabad, police arrested 50 protesters as tensions flared, but authorities managed to maintain control of the situation.
In Bihar, protests also occurred following Friday prayers at the Raza Nagar Gausia Mosque in Jamui, where hundreds of community members voiced their dissent. Demonstrators raised slogans against Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and former Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi, as well as LJP (R) National President Chirag Paswan. Protesters said they will teach thyem a lesson in the upcoming assembly elections.
