According to Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), the earthquake occurred at 12:49 pm local time (0949 GMT). Its epicenter was near Silivri, about 80 kilometers west of Istanbul. The depth of the earthquake was only 6.92 kilometers, making the vibration so intense that it could be felt on the land surface.

Officials said the earthquake was the most powerful of the earthquakes in recent years.
