US President Donald Trump has said that the US has chosen a design for the future 'Golden Dome' missile defense system. He also said that this system will be operational by the end of his term.
Just a few days after returning to the White House in January, Trump had put forward his plans for this system.
The purpose of the Golden Dome is to deal with the threat of air attacks on America. This security system will also be able to fight ballistic and cruise missiles.
A budget of $25 billion has been kept for this system. But the government estimates that this system may cost much more than this in the coming decades.
Officials have warned that the current defense system is no longer capable of fighting the weapons of potential enemies.
The system is partly inspired by Israel's Iron Dome, which the country has been using since 2011 to intercept rockets and missiles.
U.S. now has the technology: Trump
Speaking in the Oval Office alongside Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Trump said the U.S. now has the technology to construct a system to combat not just the intercontinental ballistic missiles but also against space-based and hypersonic missiles.
“In the campaign, I promised the American people that I would build a cutting edge missile defense shield to protect our homeland from the threat of foreign missile attack, and that's what we're doing today,” said Trump./
The US President added that he was “pleased to announce” that the U.S. has settled on an “architecture” for a “state of the art system” he promised would “deploy next-generation technologies across the land, sea and space, including space-based sensors and interceptors.”
