Border Security Force (BSF) jawan Purnam Kumar Shaw was in the custody of Rangers in Pakistan since 23 April. He returned on Wednesday morning. Pakistan has handed him over safely to the Indian Army. This extradition was completed peacefully through the joint check post at Attari in Amritsar. Purnam Kumar had accidentally crossed the international border and entered the border of Pakistan. He was taken into custody by Pakistan Rangers.

Immediate action was taken by the Government of India regarding the incident of Purnam being taken into custody by Pak Rangers. Indian Army officials started high-level dialogue with Pakistan and demanded the safe return of the jawan to India.

In its official statement from the Border Security Force Punjab Frontier, it has been said that "BSF jawan Purnam Kumar Shaw has been handed over to the Indian Army by Pakistan Rangers through the Attari-Wagah joint check post at 10:30 am on Wednesday, 14 May. This handover has been done peacefully and under the prescribed protocol. During this, Purnam's family members were also present there.

Purnam's pregnant wife Rajni Shaw had appealed at many levels to free her husband from Pakistan's custody. Ultimately, the Government of India put pressure on Pakistan to release Purnam through diplomatic channels. Due to which Pakistan had to release him.

Rajni Shaw also met BSF commanding officer

Purnam's wife Rajni Shaw had also met the BSF commanding officer in Ferozepur. Only after getting positive assurance from BSF officials, she returned to Kolkata with her son and family members via Amritsar.

Earlier on May 5, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee had also expressed her concern for the BSF constable of Hooghly. Mamata had said that Trinamool Congress leader Kalyan Banerjee is in touch with the family members. The BSF jawan was detained by Pak Rangers on 23 April when he inadvertently crossed the international border near Ferozepur in Punjab.
