Prime Minister Narendra Modi got a call from Canadian Prime Minister, Mark Carney.
During conversation, PM Modi congratulated Canadian Prime Minister, Mark Carney on his recent election victory and thanked him for the invitation to the G7 Summit in Kananaskis later this month.
The two leaders acknowledged the deep people-to-people ties between India and Canada and reaffirmed their commitment to work together with renewed vigour, guided by mutual respect and shared interests.
Prime Minister Modi conveyed that he looks forward to their meeting at the Summit.
After the change of government in Canada, hopes of improvement in relations between the two countries have got a boost. During the previous government, India-Canada relations had become very tense over Khalistani activities. But this is the first major diplomatic dialogue after Mark Carney came to power. In such a situation, this visit of PM Modi is not limited to just a conference, but is considered to be an important step towards bringing India-Canada relations back on track.
New hopes in India-Canada relations
This is the first time after the formation of the Carney government that India has been invited diplomatically. During the previous government, relations were constantly deteriorating due to the tension created over Canada's support to separatist Khalistan leaders. But now this conversation between the leaders of the two countries is a sign of a new beginning. This visit of PM Modi will not only strengthen India's role on the international stage, but can also bring warmth in bilateral relations.
