The 123rd episode of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Mann Ki Baat' program was broadcast on Sunday 29 June. In this program, PM Modi narrated the success story of Suma Uike, a resident of Katangi in Balaghat district.
PM Modi said the mantra of 'Women Led Development' is ready to create a new future for India. Our mothers, sisters, daughters are today lending a new direction not only for themselves but for the entire society. These women once used to work as labourers in the fields. They used to work hard all day for their livelihoods.
PM Modi said these stories from different states have different faces. But their glow is the same. This is the glow of self-confidence, of self-reliance. One such face is Suma Uike from Madhya Pradesh.
PM said Suma ji's efforts are very commendable. She took training in mushroom farming and animal husbandry by joining the Self Help Group in Katangi block of Balaghat district. Thus she found her the path to self-reliance. When Suma Uike's income increased, she also expanded her work.
PM said this journey that started with a tiny effort has now reached 'Didi Canteen' and 'Thermal Therapy Centre'. In every corner of the country, countless such women are changing their fate and that of the country.
Started oyster mushroom cultivation in her own house
On getting training, Suma first started oyster mushroom cultivation in her own house in 2021 by taking a loan of Rs 2000 from the revolving fund. When the lockdown was imposed, the sale of mushrooms decreased, so she had to stop this work.
Later in 2022, she got a chance to run Didi Canteen in the Janpad Panchayat Katangi premises. While running the canteen, Suma once again succeeded in boosting the livelihood of her family. She started earning around Rs 8000 every month.
Started a thermal therapy center
She started a thermal therapy center by taking a Mudra loan and gave employment to a member of her group in the canteen at Rs 3 thousand per month. Meanwhile, when he came to know about thermal therapy, he decided to start a thermal therapy center. Money was needed for this. Being associated with the livelihood mission, she got information about Mudra loan from the bank.
The bank in which the savings account of their group was maintained, sanctioned a Mudra loan of Rs 6 lakhs as the group's transactions were good. Suma started Ajeevika Thermal Therapy Center after taking complete training in thermal therapy. She started earning Rs 11,000 every month. When the work increased, she also employed an unemployed trained girl.
Suma Uike has achieved a new position with her family by living in a backward village, which has become an inspiration for women of other groups. Her income has become about Rs 19,000 per month. The family income has also increased to Rs 32,000.
