Six airbags mandatory in all cars in India: How much will the price of your car increase? Know the full update

The Government of India has taken a key decision regarding road safety. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has proposed that at least 6 airbags will now be made mandatory in all cars sold in the country. The purpose of this move is to make the lives of passengers safer and save their lives during car accidents.

Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister has said that our goal is to reduce the number of deaths in road accidents in India and technical measures are very important for this.

Airbags are crucial safety features

Airbags are crucial safety features in modern vehicles designed to protect occupants during collisions by quickly inflating upon impact. They work in conjunction with seatbelts, providing a cushioning effect to reduce the force of impact on the body. Airbags are strategically placed throughout the vehicle, including front, side, and sometimes rear locations, and are triggered by sensors that detect the severity of a collision.

Provision of 6 airbags will affect the cost of the car

The provision of 6 airbags will directly affect the cost of the car. Currently, cars which have only two airbags, adding 4 more airbags can increase the price by about ₹ 15,000 to ₹ 25,000. However, this increase will depend on the model and company of the car.

Entry-level cars may see 5% to 8% price hike

Entry-level cars like Alto, Kwid and S-Presso may see a 5% to 8% price hike as soon as this rule is implemented. However, this impact will be limited in mid-segment and SUV cars as they already include more safety features.

Safety vs Budget: Debate continues

While on one hand customers are becoming aware of safety, many people are also worried about the rising prices. Some experts associated with the auto industry believe that this step will bring the country's safety standards to the global level, while some manufacturers are calling it an additional burden on small customers.
The decision to make 6 airbags mandatory may increase the price of the car, but it is a necessary and welcome initiative in terms of passenger safety. If your next car is being purchased after this rule, then it is sure to get much more safety at a slightly higher price.
