Gill broke many records

Shubman Gill broke many records. He has become the first Indian and Asian captain to score a double century in a Test match in England. He has scored a double century in his Test career for the first time.

Shubman Gill has now set the record for the highest individual score by an Indian batsman in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia) countries. Before Gill's 269 runs, this record was in the name of Sachin Tendulkar, who remained unbeaten on 241 runs against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground in 2004.

Gill on Thursday broke Virat Kohli's record for the highest score by an Indian captain in Test cricket. Kohli scored 254 runs as captain of India during the India-South Africa Test match played in Pune in October 2019.

Gill is the third visiting Test captain to score more than 250 runs in an innings of a Test match played in England after Australia's Bob Simpson (311 in 1964) and South Africa's Graeme Smith (277 and 259 in 2003).

Shubman looked destined for a historic triple century

After becoming the first Asian captain to score a double century in England and the first Indian batter to score 250 outside Asia, Shubman Gill looked destined for a historic triple century.

Standing as the lone warrior for India on Day 2 of the second Test in Birmingham, Gill was just 31 runs short of becoming the first visiting captain in England in 61 years to score a triple century and only the second in history after Bill Simpson of Australia at Old Trafford in 1964. However, a lapse of concentration following Harry Brook's mind game, denied Gill that milestone.

Gill was looking for his maiden score of 300 in first-class cricket, with his previous best being 268 against Tamil Nadu in Mohali during the 2018/19 season.

Shubman Gill had scored a century (147 runs) in his debut match as captain in the first innings against England.

Before this match, Gill has scored 2306 runs in 34 Test matches by playing 62 innings at a strike rate of 61.20.
