Divya Deshmukh defeated Humpy Koneru in the rapid tiebreaks

Divya Deshmukh defeated Humpy Koneru in the rapid tiebreaks on Monday (July 28) to win the 2025 FIDE Women’s World Cup. The win has helped her become India's 88th Grandmaster, while also helping her seal qualification for the 2026 Women’s Candidates Tournament.

The two classical games had ended in draws, but in the shorter formats, Divya kept her composure and upset the reigning World Rapid Champion 1.5-0.5.

Having already knocked out top seeds like Zhu Jiner and Harika Dronavalli earlier in the tournament, Divya rose to the occasion again when it mattered most. At just 19, she becomes the youngest-ever Indian to win the Women’s World Cup.

Humpy fought hard throughout the match but couldn’t overcome Divya’s speed and sharpness in the blitzing finale.
