Why ED officer Kapil Raj who oversaw arrest of Hemant Soren and Arvind Kejriwal has resigned

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) officer, who oversaw high-profile actions like the arrest of two  Chief Ministers of the country, has resigned. ED officer Kapil Raj has resigned after 16 years of government service. He not only led the investigation of sensitive political cases, but also showed direction to the agency's strategy in complex cases like money laundering.

In the order issued by the Finance Ministry, Kapil's resignation has been accepted which is effective from July 17. This decision of Kapil Raj has come at a time when there is a debate going on in the whole country about corruption and transparency in power.

Kapil Raj, a 2009 batch Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer, is 45 years old. According to his close ones, he has resigned from the service due to personal reasons, while he still had about 15 years left for his retirement. Raj served in the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for about eight years and recently completed his deputation tenure in the agency. Before resigning, he was posted as Additional Commissioner in the GST Intelligence Wing in Delhi.

In January 2024, Kapil Raj supervised the arrest of then Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren in an alleged land scam. Just before the arrest, Soren met the Governor at the Raj Bhavan in Ranchi and resigned from his post. During this, Kapil Raj was also present there and soon after the meeting, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) team arrested him.

Just a few months later, in March 2024, Kapil Raj was also present during the ED raid at the official residence of then Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal at Flag Staff Road. After that, on March 21, Raj was present on the spot at the time of Kejriwal's arrest and was supervising the preparation and submission of the arrest memo.

In the Enforcement Directorate, Kapil Raj was known as an investigation expert of politically sensitive, complex and high-profile cases.
