Gujarat: Woman discovers suspicious device in Surat restaurant washroom, what happened next?
A hidden mobile phone was discovered inside the washroom of K's Charcoal restaurant, located in the upscale area of Piplod, Surat, Gujarat. The incident came to light when a woman, visiting the restaurant with her family, noticed a suspicious device on the ventilation grille while using the washroom. Upon closer inspection, she realized it was a mobile phone that was secretly recording.
The woman promptly alerted the restaurant management, who subsequently reported the matter to the Umra Police Station. Police checked the CCTV footage and apprehended a man named Surendra Rana, a cleaner at the establishment. Two mobile phones were recovered from him, according to Surat City Zone 4 DCP Vijay Singh Gurjar.
Accused identified through CCTV footage
According to the police, the team of officials reviewed the restaurant’s CCTV footage and questioned staff members. Leading to the identification of the suspect. The accused, identified as Surendra Rana, has been taken into police custody for further investigation. Two mobile phones were also recovered from him.
CCTV footage showed that Rana was the last person to enter the washroom prior to the discovery of the recording device.
During the investigation, authorities uncovered four objectionable videos from the restaurant, along with a large amount of pornographic content on Rana's phone. His mobile phone has been sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory for a comprehensive digital analysis.
In an attempt to gather more information, police have questioned about 40 male staff members and are seizing the mobile phones of those who were close to Rana to determine if he shared the recorded videos with anyone.
Rana, originally from Jharkhand, had been working as a cleaner at the restaurant for the past two years and resides in Surat with his younger brother, who is also employed at the restaurant.
The mobile phone is currently under examination to ascertain whether any additional photos or videos were recorded by the suspect. Authorities are also investigating whether this act was an isolated incident or part of a broader scheme to violate privacy.
