India seeks no enemies but welfare of our people, farmers & small businesses is our top priority: Rajnath Singh; what he said about trade and tariff war
“In today’s era of terrorism, pandemics and regional conflicts, self-reliance in defence is not merely an option, but a condition for survival and progress. It is not about protectionism, it is about sovereignty and national autonomy,” stated Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh during his address at a Defence Conclave with the theme ‘Warfare in the 21st Century’ in New Delhi on August 30, 2025.
Rajnath Singh highlighted that the conclave comes at a significant moment with India’s Armed Forces displaying valour through Operation Sindoor just months ago, while conflicts, trade wars and instability continue to shape the global landscape.
Singh underlined that the geopolitical shifts have shown the nation that dependence on others for defence is no longer an option. He added that the Government, under the leadership of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has always believed that a self-reliant India alone can safeguard its strategic autonomy.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has said that in international relations there is no permanent friend or permanent enemy, there is only permanent interest.
His statement comes at a time when the US has imposed a 50 percent tariff on goods coming from India, which has come into effect from August 27.
Situations of trade war and tariff war are becoming serious
Rajnath Singh said, "The situations of trade war and tariff war are becoming serious. Whenever any country moves forward, its views match with some countries. On the other hand, its views do not match with some countries."
"Those with whom the views match are considered friendly nations and those with whom the views do not match are generally considered enemies."
The Defence Minister said, "India does not consider anyone as its enemy, but for us the interest of our people, our farmers, our small traders, our countrymen is of utmost importance. And we cannot compromise with the welfare of our country at any cost."
He said, "No matter how much pressure is put, India will continue to give top priority to the interests of its farmers, businessmen, shopkeepers, livestock farmers and common citizens."
