What S Jaishankar said while slamming President Donald Trump over US tariffs
Foreign Minister S Jaishankar has once again slammed President Donald Trump over the US tariffs. He has called the 50 percent tariff imposed on India for buying Russian oil completely wrong. He also said that India is being discriminated against.
Speaking at an event organized by a newspaper, Foreign Minister S Jaishankar said that India's priority is to protect the interests of its farmers and small producers. Jaishankar emphasized that India is not going to compromise on its interests.
We are firm to protect the interests of our farmers and small producers
The Foreign Minister said that there are some limits, which have to be followed. Our farmers and small producers are mainly important for us. We cannot back down in this matter. He said that some people can say that we are successful or unsuccessful. But as a government, we are firm to protect the interests of our farmers and small producers. We are firm about this.
S Jaishankar said that this is something on which we cannot compromise. He also stressed that the tariff issue is being wrongly presented as an oil dispute. He said that China and other European countries are importing more oil from Russia than us. But the tariff issue is not applicable to them.
Russia-European trade is much bigger than India-Russia trade
Jaishankar further said that when people say that India is giving money to Russia for the war, they should also see that Russia-European trade is much bigger than India-Russia trade. There is a lot of contradiction in this. Jaishankar said that India has full right to take decisions in its national interest. He called it strategic autonomy.
Talks are going on despite the tension
Jaishankar also talked about India-US relations. Regarding India and US relations, the Foreign Minister said that talks are going on despite the tension. He said that we are two big countries. The lines are not cut, people are talking to each other, and we will see where it goes. When asked about the new ambassador to Washington, Jaishankar refused to comment.
