Who is B Sudarshan Reddy, India Alliance candidate for the post of Vice President

Former Supreme Court Justice B Sudarshan Reddy has been made the candidate by India Alliance for the election of Vice President.

Senior leaders of India Alliance, led by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, gave this information in a press conference in New Delhi.

Earlier, the BJP-led NDA had announced the name of CP Radhakrishnan for the post of Vice President. CP Radhakrishnan is the Governor of Maharashtra. He has been the President of Tamil Nadu BJP.

Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from the post of Vice President last month citing health reasons.

After this, the election for the post of Vice President is to be held on September 9. The last date for filing nomination for this is August 21.

During the press conference, Kharge said, "All of us parties have together decided to field a common candidate in this Vice Presidential election. All opposition parties are ready to fight together."

He said, "B Sudarshan Reddy is one of the few progressive jurists of India."

During the press conference, Trinamool Congress MP Derek O'Brien said, "All opposition parties, including the Aam Aadmi Party, are united."

Announcing the name of Justice B Sudarshan Reddy, Mallikarjun Kharge said, "All opposition parties have together chosen a candidate for the election of the Vice President. I am happy that all the parties have agreed together. This is a great achievement for democracy and the Constitution. Whenever the Constitution is in danger, we all fight together to save it. We have decided that in this election there should be a candidate who does good work for the country." 

Kharge said, "We all know how he stood in support of the poor and protected the Constitution. This is an ideological battle and all opposition parties agreed and that is why we are contesting this election." 

Joined the Andhra Pradesh Bar Council in 1971

Born on July 8, 1946, B. Sudarshan Reddy is a BA, LLB. As a lawyer, he joined the Andhra Pradesh Bar Council on December 27, 1971. He practiced as a lawyer in the Andhra Pradesh High Court. Between 1988-90, he also worked as a government lawyer in the High Court.

In 1990, B. Sudarshan Reddy also worked as an additional standing counsel for the central government for six months. He has also worked as a legal advisor and lawyer for Osmania University.

Was made a judge of the Supreme Court  in 2007

On May 2, 1995, he was appointed as a permanent judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court. In 2005, he became the Chief Justice of the Guwahati High Court. After this, in 2007, he was made a judge of the Supreme Court and retired in 2011.

Kharge said that B. Sudarshan Reddy will file his nomination on August 21. Before this, on Wednesday, August 20, all the opposition party MPs will meet in the Central Hall of Parliament at 1 pm.
