Project Cheetah achieved another historic milestone on Wednesday when Forest Department officials successfully released Dhira, an approximately 7.5-year-old South African female cheetah from Kuno National Park, into Gandhi Sagar Sanctuary at 2 p.m.

Gandhi Sagar Sanctuary is situated in northwestern Madhya Pradesh, bordering the state of Rajasthan. The sanctuary is spread over 368 sq km across the Mandsaur and Neemuch districts and is defined by the Chambal River, which flows through it. It features a diverse ecosystem of dry deciduous forests and riverine areas, and is an Important Bird and Biodiversity Area (IBA).

Dhira remained calm but alert in her transport crate

The operation to shift Dhira from Kuno National Park began on Wednesday morning , where the Forest Department's veterinary team, field staff, and senior officials closely monitored the entire process. Dhira, the female cheetah, remained calm but alert in her transport crate. Dhira completed the approximately 7-hour journey in a special air-conditioned vehicle. Her health and safety were closely monitored throughout the journey.

Dhira observed new surroundings

When the crate door was opened at Gandhi Sagar Sanctuary, Dhira paused for a moment, observing her new surroundings, and then leaped agilely onto the soil of his new home, taking his first steps. This relocation marks a significant step towards expanding the cheetah population in India.

Two male cheetahs had previously been relocated to Gandhi Sagar

Two male cheetahs had previously been relocated from Kuno National Park to Gandhi Sagar Sanctuary. The relocation of a female cheetah will pave the way for a viable breeding population. This is crucial for the long-term success of the project. This event was not just the relocation of an animal, but the continuation of a dream. It was a testament to India's commitment to restoring its lost natural heritage and a proud moment for every member of 'Team Cheetah'.
