Tamil Nadu Karur Stampede: Action taken after 39 people die at rally; FIR filed against actor Vijay's party leaders
In the aftermath of the tragic stampede that occurred during a political rally addressed by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president and actor Vijay on Saturday, the actor has expressed his condolences and announced financial support for the victims and their families. The incident, which took place on September 27, 2025, claimed at least 39 lives and left several others injured.
Following the stampede at his rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, actor-turned-politician Vijay posted on Instagram expressing his grief.
He wrote, "My heart is broken. I am in unbearable pain and grief that cannot be described in words. I express my deepest condolences and sympathies to the families of my dear brothers and sisters who lost their lives in Karur. I pray for the speedy recovery of those being treated in the hospital."
The primary reason for the massive crowd at the Karur rally was that organizers had only announced a capacity of 10,000 people, but approximately 27,000 actually gathered. This increased crowd size and the delay in the programme led to the stampede. Officials said security forces and medical teams were immediately deployed, but crowd control was delayed. Police and administration are conducting a thorough investigation and will recommend measures to avoid such incidents in the future.
FIR against Anand and Nirmal Kumar
According to sources, actor Vijay held a meeting with his team via video conference. Police have filed an FIR against Anand and Nirmal Kumar, leaders of his party TVK. This incident has raised questions about whether security arrangements are adequate at major political and entertainment events.
