Smartphones are already included in the 18% GST slab. Even before the GST reform, smartphones were taxed at 18% and will remain the same even now. Therefore, there will be no reduction in mobile prices like Smart TV and AC.

The India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) had requested the government to bring smartphones into the 5% slab. The organization argued that today the phone is not just a luxury item, but an essential tool for the Digital India mission. Before the implementation of GST, most states used to give tax relief to mobile phones by considering them as essential goods. Initially, there was 12% GST on smartphones, but in 2020 it was increased to 18%.
The government's GST reform before the festive season will provide relief to the general public at many levels. It will not have any effect on the prices of smartphones, but the burden on people's pockets will be reduced due to TV, AC and everyday items becoming cheaper. While on the one hand iPhone buyers will have to pay the same tax as before, discounts on other products can increase the pace of consumer purchases.
